Hi, I have been looking for guidance on setting out walkways in our factory. Is there a standard size that a walkway should be? we are looking at about 900mm but i cannot find any clear set measurements.
Thanks in advance
Steve.

HSG 136 Workplace transport safety : employers' guide, is full of a large amount of information on pedestrian routes. Specifically paragraphs 371 - 392 should be your first port of call if you havnt already looked
Not sure if there is a specific width mentioned above a "safe distance"

I recently had walkways painted in our distribution centre at 1.2 meters, this was advised by the painting firm as it gives enough room for two persons to pass.
A wide walkway also shows that you are serious about giving pedestrians safe space.

Steve,
We have recently introduced a full access around site incorporating pedestrian walkways. We were instructed that 'highways standard' walkways are created to a width of 1.2 metres.
Hope this helps

The Highways Agency provides free downloads to its Design Manual for Roads and Bridges.
TA 90/05 is The Geometric Design of Pedestrian, Cycle and Equestrian Routes -
http://www.standardsforh...vol6/section3/ta9005.pdf
This may be the highway standard previous posters are referring to -
Section 7.1 is on pedestrian routes, and says where it is not practicable to provide widths of 2.0m for the full length of a route, widths of 1.3m may be provided over short distances. But there are some “ifs and buts” with this, so if this is the appropriate standard, a quick look might be useful, especially since it tends to refer to road use by pedestrians.
Alternatively, BS 8300:2009 (disabled access) also gives some figures for internal pedestrian routes:
900mm is the width of a corridor - the standard says you need a clear width of 1800 mm to allow two wheelchair users to pass each other in a corridor, 900 mm clear space where doors open into a corridor and a clear width of corridor not less than 1200 mm - which is where the 1.2m figure may come from.
