Posted By Crim During a recent visit to a shop fitting site by HSE Inspector there was a suggestion that the electrical installation should be protected inside a locked cupboard with a single key held by a responsible person. Does this mean that a temporary cupboard should be built around the electrics with cut outs to allow the cables to pass through? This was not a requirement of the Inspector but it sounds like a good way forward and we wish to write a company policy to this regard, to be adopted on all sites in future.

Posted By Paul Skyrme Hi Crim, There are a few HSE docs you can look at for guidance. HSR25 & HSG85 However, this is a very good idea, plus it ensures that any isolation remains in place so that systems are safe to work on. The "box" would not need to be complex. As long as the temporary installation is sound, then you could construct a wooden say cheap shuttering plywood surround, plus it would give the supplies added protection. There are dedicated enclosures available with all of the control gear inside, just wheel 'em up and connect 'em up! Don't over complicate things! However, don't allow the outer enclosure to provide any "electrical" type protection & ensure suitable access and lighting levels. Paul.
