I am looking for some guidance concerning the ANSI Z87-1-2003 Standard (American National Standards Institute) for eye protection. One of our employees has purchased eye protection direct from an American website. The protection has the above ANSI marked on it, but no CE or BSEN166 markings. I currently have stopped the use of this equipemnt until i get some supportive evidence that any PPE With only ANSI standards are suitable for use and comply with UK or EU legislation. I have contacted the British Standards, the only thing they can confirm that this standard meets their criteria? Can anyone enlighten me further concerning this issue.

The PPE AT WORK Regs 1992 say that the provision of PPE must comply with any EU directive. This leads you to the PPE Regs 1992 which state that there must be a CE mark affixed to the PPE. You are not going to get a CE mark attached to his spectacles, and therefore your best way forward is to tell him to take them home and leave them there. You, as the employer, will provide him with a corectly marked pair of eye protectors free of charge. His duty is to co-operate with you and wear the eye protection that you provide. If he does not want to, then he should go and work somewheres else!
Good luck
