The misuse of "we don't need to re-invent the wheel"!!

Yes, I do agree but sometimes (actually always) we do need to re-manufacture the wheel so as to suit the vehicle in question which can be a mini-bus, sport car or a long truck.
When it comes to HS I believe that the wheel (= HS Management System / arrangements) has to be re-designed / re-manufactured based on the relevant & specific RAs.
When “we don’t need to re-invent the wheel” equals “copy & paste”, HS professional has to say No this wrong!
Just I’m thinking loudly

Good point Amjad. I am currently advising on project work.
Each project is different, with a different client. Now my company employees still need to follow our corporate procedures, but we need dovetail it to fit with the client procedures -interface documents and procedures.
There are times when a good old cut and paste with a different badge will also work though :>)

Dave thanks for the response,
Yes it is acceptable that one makes some (informed) copy/paste where this is suitable based on what one has on ground (= risk based decision).
But it is going to be completely unacceptable when a big boss brings HSE system that developed for a construction company in UK & asks you to change (company name / logo) so it can be used for a FM company in middle east. Says to you "we don't need to re-invent the wheel"

I agree. i have enountered on a number of occasions companies which have taken other organisation's health and safety policies and just put their names on the front. Most of the time it means that even generic risk assessments become meaningless.
I wish you luck Amjad. It sounds like the person in charge is aware of his duties but is being a bit slippery, for monetary or other reasons, but maybe shock tactics could work: legal results if inspected etc.
Again, good luck.

Yeh, he knows & i know that there is a sever deadline pressure on him.
The good news, specific & suitable HSE system is developed & in place now.
Thanks & Regards

I totally agree with your statement. In my opinion the 'we don't need to reinvent the wheel' should mean lets take the basic concept of the round wheel.

What about the adoption of best practice?
If I came accross a peer who had a solution that suited my requirements, I would not have an issue implmenting it too as long as it was agreed by all parties.

I agree with your statement, and I think it fits the comment I made. However as I have opportunity to see many approaches (shall we say) I have seen many 'lets shove this square peg in this round hole'
If the approach from one company fits the approach from the other company, great, however many times that is not the case and the Risk Assessment has been cut & pasted and has no bearing on the activity being carried out.
