Posted By Phil Grace Given that this was in the Sun I debated whether to respond... but here goes. It seems that the steps in question were built in a manner/to a design that was not as agreed in the planning process. Sounds like a good reason for council to come down on operator...! Would us safety professionals accept a guarding solution that was not as agreed on the drawing/design. I think not. The steps also failed to meet current guidance on angles/steepness and landing breaks. There is clear and long standing guidance on how steps and stairs should be constructed e.g. British Standards. I would have thought that there had to be a good reason to deviate from the guidance. And would a safety professional ignore BS guidance? Sounds to me like the Sun has taken a perfectly "OK" story and turned into a elf & safety story.... Just reinforce everything I believed about reporters/newspapers. Phil

Posted By Phil Rose I really do find it quite unbelievable that people are passing judgement on others as a result of these reports. Swis, are you going for the record on surfing the rags for supposed H&S stories and then expecting objective or informed discussion? I despair!
