Hi All,
I know this is not strictly speaking an H&S question, but I would appreciate any advice you would care to give.
Our local Fire Authority is refusing our normal registration cert to store up to 250kg within a steel ISO as although it is in an area not accessible to the public, they argue that it does not provide the required half hour fire separation under the MSEAR Regs.
They have advised that we build a brick structure with a double plasterboard roof measuring 2.5m long x 2m wide x 2m tall to satisfy their requirements at it is not possible for us to store the ISO outside.
This structure should we build it would be contained within a warehouse already equipped with sprinklers, emergency lighting, smoke detectors etc etc, but my question is would a storage room of this size be required to be fitted with any of these devices itself?
The fire service do not think so, but I would appreciate anyone else's point of view.
Many thanks
Jay

I expect they are looking at adequate containment as you already have detection & suppression in the immediate area, although additional detection for early warning inside may also be appropriate?

The provision of 30 minute enclosure around the ISO container is sufficient to meet the requirements of MSER. There is no specific requirement to install detection or suppression equipment within the enclosure unless of course it is a requirement of your insurance providers.
