Hi
I apologise that this link is not strictly concerning H&S. My employer operates a fleet of HGVs, which obviously present a significant environmental impact as they use significant amounts of diesel. Consequently an objective as been set under the EMS to look at ways of reducing diesel comsumption/emissions. All of the vehicles are well maintained and operate using the fuel additive (Adblue) in order to improve emissions. Can anyone out there suggest other ways of reducing diesel comsumption/improving these emissions.
I am sure some of you out there have come across the same issue, and would be grateful for any advice.
Thanks
Andy

We put a percentage of our drivers through SAFED Safe Efficient Driving programme, basically a company come and assess your drivers it takes them through how best to save fuel when drivig, smooth gear change selecting the correct speed gears etc, they then give you break down of each driver and where and how you can best make savings. They will give you a full written report.

You are stictly talking about targets as the Env. objective should be to reduce the env. impacts of fleet usage. Fuel economy is but one aspect. Go back to the standard and look at the guidance on setting Os and Ts

Get tracking technology. Apparently it pays for itself quickly via ensuring drivers stay on the proper route etc.
The other area is to ensure the vehicles are loaded efficiently - always full, not empty on short journeys etc.
You could go down the route of using biodiesel, in theory carbon neutral, however there are doubts about this.
Lastly try the Evirowise web site or http://www.dft.gov.uk/pgr/roads/environment/
