Posted By redbriggsy In a business that operates a chain of bars and restaurants they have relatively small commercial kitchens with extraction and also extraction in the bars that was used to git rid of cigarette smoke before the ban. There is of course requirement under coshh for extration to be inspected and tested and it states annually but i have seen elsewhere that extraction is every 14 months? Have things changed with regard extraction that was used for cigeratte smoke post ban? Does the kitchen extraction fall under coshh? Thanks in anticipation...........

Posted By Coshh Assessor The requirement under COSHH is to inspect/test LEV every 14 months. Inspecting it annually is probably easier and gives you a two month leeway if the inspection is late, so is a sensible way to do it. COSHH applies if the purpose of the LEV is to reduce exposure to hazardous substances.

Posted By Bill Elliott Not so sure that extraction ventilation in catering premises qualifies as LEV as such. This type of ventilation is provided to ensure adequate air flow for complete & safe combustion for gas applainces; to get rid of steam and heat laden air and to provide comfortable working conditions. There is an argument that COSHH will apply as the air being removed, particularly over deep fat fryers and the like, will be oil & hydrocarbon laden which may be carcinogenic. A good starting point for information is the HSE's CAIS No10 rev1 information sheet which also gives useful links to more in depth information. HTH

Posted By Coshh Assessor I agree it may not fall under COSHH. But if there is a COSHH assessment that identifies LEV as a control measure, then the need for inspection/test follows.
