Posted By trevor-ross Proffessional advise sought , a ex employer of mine is having problems with a CNC machine. The machine has a closed top which prohibits standing up fully(about 4ft) and the employees are lifting in 40mm granite sometimes needing up to 6men in the machine at any one time. They only have to take the weight and set down touching the corner pins with a slight adjustment of an inch or two this is to allow the forklift toes to be removed with out touching the suction stands. Most of the pieces being lifted in to the machine can be done with no lifting involved so this is not the norm. The questions is : is it acceptable to continue manually setting pieces in place?

Posted By Ron Hunter A retractable pneumatic or hydraulic bed (or column set)incorporating ball-rollers would take the weight and allow for easier set-down and adjustment.Power or gearing could also be applied to push/position the workpiece against the corner pins, perhaps in conjunction with laser alignment. Much of the manual effort and intervention could be effectively designed-out? The 4ft high cover and posture problems associated with that is surely highly questionable and one could envision some modification to allow adjustment or hinging whilst setting operations take place (all fully interlocked of course). Difficult to answer precisely without a fuller picture. A determination of what is "acceptable" has to be measured against what is "reasonably practicable" in terms of mitigating risk - i.e. Risk Assessment!
