Posted By gary woolam Hi all, over the last couple of years i have been providing h&s advice to a local fencing contractor. They have contacted myself in relation to helping them with there CHAS application/renewal. I have looked through actual CHAS application and the actual requirements do not look like causing them any problems. But i have not actualy completed this application previously and would like an opportuntity to discuss this with an IOSH member who has experience of completing this process and dealing with CHAS etc. Would not want to say i could process application for them, and, then process does not go smoothly etc. Just a bit nervous having never completed this before, thanks for any help or guidance that IOSH members could offer!!

Posted By Ron Hunter Gary, the process is pretty much evidence based and, dare I say it, relatively straightforward! Policy, org.,arrangements and various areas of risk assessment (inc. COSHH, Man Handling etc)which are legally compliant/fit for purpose/suitable and sufficient & relevant to the line of work and they're pretty much there. Your focus should be on the quality of the evidence they currently have?

Posted By Alan Johnson Hi Gary This process will be fairly straightforward for you if you have a good relationship and understanding of the company, its processes and its personnel. If the company have in place a reasonable safety management system the assessor will be trying to glean from the evidence provided that the company are following the systems and procedures set out. The assessment is simply a review of the evidence that the company provide and as such it is important that recent documentation is provided i.e. training certification, risk assessments, site inspections etc. What you really must do is download the CHAS standards from the website (www.chas.gov.uk) at the same time as you download the form and if you can provide the evidence as indicated to be required in the standards (or at least most of it) you should not have any great problems. Do not be surprised if the assessor asks for some additional information as the assessment is quite detailed and very many applications do omit some of the information required, this is not a problem as the assessor will provide you with a suitable time period to provide additional information (and it is certainly not to be taken as a failing or to be seen as letting the company down). In general it is very likely that the company will benefit from this relatively cost effective audit process - but it may have to alter / improve / amend some areas. Keep the assessments and information specific, do not simply provide generic risk assessments and off the shelf policies ect. and above all be honest as the assessors can spot fabricated or distant / remote documents pretty easily. I would say good luck now, but it is not down to luck it is all about preparation and providing quality evidence / information to meet the standards (which after all are basically simply minimum legal requirements). Regards - Alan
