Posted By Donna Al Assaad Good afternoon,
Our draft Driving at Work policy defines commuting and business travel (Driving at Work) as the following:
"Commuting" refers to travel to and from an employee’s normal place of work
"Driving at Work" refers to any work carried out on behalf of the company that involves the employee in time spent driving a vehicle and covers all journeys other than to and from the normal place of work.
My predicament lies in the fact that we have more than one main office, in a fairly localised area of West London.
There are employees who would start their day at Office B when required (then travel to Office A), although they may be based for the most part at Office A. Additionally, people may be based at Office A 80% of the time, but occasionally need to get to Office B or C... & then travel home from there.
Would these scenarios constitute commuting, or driving at work? Should we define specifically the 3-4 sites that would be classed as 'normal places of work' in regards to commuting? Or should we define commuting as the journey to or from home, to locations A; B & C (e.g.)? - Thus determining any journey between offices as business travel..
I'm sensing a minefield nearby... ?!
Your advice and opinions are greatly appreciated.
Many thanks,
Donna Al Assaad

Posted By garyh I would say that travelling between different places of work, after you have driven to work from hiome, is business travel.

Posted By Adrian.Durand Hi,
The following is based on sites A, B and C all being part of the same company who empoys the driver:
The drive to the office (A,B or C)from home is the commute. During the day, travelling between offices is the business travel. Driving from A,B or C to home is the commute again.

Adrian

Posted By peter gotch Hi Donna
It will depend on both what staff contracts say about base location and consideration of tax issues.
Suppose based at office A, 20 miles from home, and visiting office B (10 miles from home) and office C (30 miles from home.
First 40 miles round trip from home is commute. Anything in addition is business travel.
Suppose contract says you can be expected to be based at A and C at company's discretion....then I think first 60 miles round trip from home is commute unless you can demonstrate that custom and practice is eg. 4 days starting off at A and one day starting off at C, in which case commute is first 40 miles round trip four days a week and first 60 on the fifth.
Suggest you ask HM Revenue and Customs for any additional guidance.
Regards, Peter
