Posted By Raymond Rapp I seem to recall the HSE issued guidance a few years ago with regards to manual handling of kerb stones. The guidance suggested using vacuum kerb stone lifters. My question is: does this apply equally to small sections of road (ie maintenance), as opposed to large sections of road? Many thanks. Ray

Posted By Zyggy Turek Ray, If you think about it, carrying out several small maintenance repairs a day will probably equate to a large renewal project & the cumulative potential for musculo-skeletal problems will be the same. I am reliably informed that if the HSE come across such work where no mechanical aids are available & used(doesn't have to be confined to vacuum lifters)then enforcement action is sure to follow! Posted By Bob Youel Additionally ensure that your manual handling assessments are adequate and work from there noting that the term 'so far as it is reasonably practicable to do so' is not as simple to justify, as many think that it is, so do not rely on hiding behind it whilst providing no mechanical aids

Posted By Raymond Rapp Thanks to all for the information. It transpires that a vacuum lifter was provided but the guys on site decided not to use it! Ray

Posted By Raymond Rapp No, the guys were supervised. Short of an investigation I cannot determine why they chose not to use the vacuum lifter. I suspect it was because there was only half a dozen they could not be bothered. Kerbs weighed 67Kg FYI.
