Hi
While trying to sort out some confined space classification queries i came across the Water UK Occasional guidance note on the " Classification and Management of Confined Space Entries" and the associated training schemes. According to the document this system was set up to provide some standardisatio of approach to confined space work and contractor competency in the water industry.
I was wondering if this has been widely adopted within the water industry and contractors, and has it become the standard as it appears to have been out for some time now?
Many thanks

Hi
My company works for most of the UK Water Companies, and in the past has had to wade through lots of Water Company-specific information to make sure we did things in each of their particular ways.
This naturally introduced inconsistencies in methods and we have been caught out when teams have been jumping through Hoop X when they should have been jumping through Hoop Y, even though, in our case, they have not been working unsafely, IMHO (from the position of working in Confined Spaces for 20+yrs, etc, etc).
In terms of the Water UK Guidance, while I wouldn’t go quite as far as to say it’s a fully adopted standard, it has enabled us to introduce some consistency in the way we work.
We can (generally) now say “here are our procedures, they comply (or are more stringent than) the Water UK guidelines, our staff are trained to the relevant C&G standards and this is how we will work” and have it accepted.
This has reduced (but not eliminated totally, don’t be daft!) the hoop jumping!
Hope this makes sense (it is Friday!) and helps.
