Bleak - I am sure that if you sit down with the 'right' people at work that you can find a mutually acceptable solution to the problem that you find yourself in. There is normally more than one way to skin a cat.

Just one of the many companies that make safety shoes to fit special circumstances. I'm sure a quick search will come up with more.
You've been the company a long time so it's time they spent the cash.

safety shoes nowadays are just as comfortable as normal shoes (providing you get the right type) do you wear normal shoes?
If your employer has risk assessed your activities and during the risk assessment they have found that you require safety shoes, then you must wear them. If you don't, they MIGHT be able to offer you suitable work in an area where you don't need them, however if they don't have this alternative they might be forced to let you go.

just been through similar -
A rep from the JAL group (via well know PPE supply company G***hams) provided lots of helpful advice and a shoe that was (as pointed out above) as comfortable and light as a normal shoe.
(Other suppliers exist, just found solution with above)

It makes me angry to hear about situations like this. Please let us know what progress you make with your employers.
If you have a problem with your feet which prevents you from wearing the safety shoes which your employer normally provides, then it is their duty to find shoes which do fit your feet. If no shoe can be found, then they may have to move you to duties where there is no risk to your feet. Threatening you with the sack for not wearing shoes which are uncomfortable for you is definitely not the way to go about things.

Morning,
Agree with the previous post - There is a wealth of information out there to support diabetics who can often struggle to find safety shoes to fit comfortably. At my previous employer, where safety shoes were mandatory, I ended up asking the NHS trust to produce some Safety boots for one of our employees - as he had had other shoes from them.
There is nearly always a solution other than sacking!
One other piece of advice - When it comes to wearing PPE your GPs advice is not as important as the Occupational health doctor at your employers (if they have one).

Look at the PPE regs.
Reg 4, section 3
(b) it takes account of ergonomic requirements and the 'state of health' of
the person or persons who may wear it, and of the characteristics of the
workstation of each such person;(d)
(c) it is capable of fitting the wearer 'correctly', if necessary, after
adjustments within the range for which it is designed;
