Thoughts please regarding the fitting of Fire Extinguishers in Tower Crane cabs or on engineering decks.
We have a customer who has decided Tower Cranes supplied should be fitted with FE,S.
After much searching and reading PUWER BS7121 part5 CPA best practice guides and the Strategic Forum Operators Handbook there is no definitive answer.
Our thoughts which are upheld from Technical Managers, Supervisors and Operators is a definite NO.(Some with up to 30 years experience in the Industry.)
Part of this reasoning is as follows.
1. Chance of Fire in cab highly unlikely Company policy no smoking or unauthorised electrical appliances.
2. Possible accidental activation in an enclosed space.
3. Full Training to operate would have to be given to Operators.
4. Use of Extinguisher for nefarious or incorrect purposes by Operator or Intruders.
5. If placed on the Machine Deck weather exposure and as above.
6. Fire Extinguisher checks by competent person who does not like heights?
There are many more reasons which I hope will be supplied.
Likewise reasons for fitting.
My Opinion is no for the above reasons but I would obviously appreciate views from the forum.
Regards Alex

I would assume the most likely reason for a fire would be an electrical fault, in which case the extinguisher wouldn't be of a type suitable to let loose in an enclosed cab, and the combustion products would be extremely toxic. Getting out and down the ladder would be the priority, and you wouldn't want people to stop and think about doing otherwise.
