Posted By Paul I am currently working on a project where the the ladder access to manholes is by means of steel rungs bolted to the inner concrete slab/wall. The distance from the face of the concrete slab to the outer rung is approx 35cm (350mm). I am questioning the civil dept that installed the rungs, as I consider the distance to be a hazard, for example maintenance personnel to enter / exit the manholes, as there feet may miss the rung and enter the area between rung and wall, causing them to loss their footing and fall. I am searching for guidance on this matter, but am unable to source such on my searches of various HSE website information sites. Does anyone have information on this issue that may be of help to me. Any information will be much appreciated Thanking you. Paul

Posted By Brett Day Paul There is a MoD estates publication that gives good advice on access and space for maintenance requirements, it also includes a section on working in service ducts, tunnels, crawlways and manhole access. DMG-08 Space Requirements For Plant Access, Operation And Maintenance is the name of the document, it may be of some use. Regards Brett

Posted By Paul Thank you Brett and Lois for your help and information on this matter. Sorry for my delay in replying, the inter-net connections here in Damascus, where I am working, went down for security reasons?? I am checking on the information sources you kindly provided to me. Once again thank you Paul
