I believe most of the cable trenches have water sprinkler system installed for fire protection. Does this takes into consideration that the cable insulation is good enough to sustain any damage caused if fire occurs and the water is not a problem while the cable is energised. What is the philosophy behind using water on live electrical cables?

Any help!

Prads

Prads, without knowing your site it is difficult to give a definitive answer. However, the cables (and possibly pipework) may well have combustible insulation and there is a good chance that the trenches will have accumulations of combustible rubbish. Put these two together and the possibility of fire spread via the trench from one part of the site to another is high.

Perhaps it would have been more advisable to have regular fire breaks in the trenches to stop the spread.
