Posted By SBH Although a non-maintained emergency lighting system is in a care home, should it be adapted to ensure the final exit lighting is on at all times. Yes, it will illuminate if there is a failure to the supply,, but does best practice suggest as it is residential care home that the lights should be permanently lit. SBH

Posted By DaGuru My understanding is the purpose of such lighting is to give a degree illumination when normal lighting fails, so it would not be a requirement for them to be constantly on. As long as the unit runs off a seperate power supply I can see no reason why it would have to be on all the time. I cant seem to find specifics with regard to care homes, so maybe someone else can help direct.

Posted By Messy Shaw Maintained lighting is used where the ambient lighting level is usually low, such as theatres and restaurants etc/ It is provided in order that that persons in the building can find the exit routes when moving about in that subdued lighting. My experience is that care homes are usually very well lit - even at night- so therefore non maintained lighting would be the norm. However there may be a case for maintained emergency lighting if the usual corridor lighting is dimmed at night.
