Anyone know how vents on fire doors work? I have come across air vents on the bottom half of fire doors in a 3 story building. Is this correct? How is the integrity of the door maintained with these vents in place. I have not come across this before. The building i visited is 2 years old.

I believe the vents expand in heat thereby preventing the smoke getting out and the oxygen getting in.

Most of these vents will (hopefully) include intumescent materials which swell when heated and fill the vent space preventing the passage of fire.
This company sell them http://www.envirograf.com/
However, this does not prevent smoke passing through the vent. There are electrically operated vents that can be linked to the buildings smoke detection system, which automatically closes the vent when the fire alarm operates. An expensive option, but sometimes the only option

I have on one occasion seen a hole cut through a fire door with just a bog standard louvre vent screwed over it. I could see quite clearly that there was no method of sealing it in the event of a fire. That said it made no difference to the fire stopping ability as the foor was wedged open by a fire extinguisher! This was in a training room.....at a fire station!
