Posted By Paul Duell Afternoon all I'm sure I recall a thread on this subject, but I've not been able to find it in the forum. I had a phone call transferred to me this afternoon from someone wanting to speak to a director responsible for Health and Safety. He claimed to be calling from the Health and Safety Executive and was calling in connection with giving advice on recent changes to director's responsibilities. My naturally suspicious mind makes me think that this isn't the kind of thing the H&SE would be doing...anyone know anything about these calls, or had a similar one? Cheers all...

Posted By John J Ask them for a number that you can call back on. This usually sorts the wheat from the chaff

Posted By Ron Hunter HSE have been known to commission others to conduct surveys. I agree though it is prudent to be wary of the underhand sales approach. Should be a simple matter to check credentials, and worthwhile.

Posted By Juan Carlos Arias If it was something important, they would write to the company. I'm inclined to think this is more a sales call

Posted By Coshh Assessor I've also had calls "on behalf of the HSE" which were surveys, I suspect this may be all it is.

Posted By mike morland Had the same call ourselves yesterday. They were advised to call me (H&S Manager). Interestingly, they never called back. Was it something I said? Mike

Posted By Jay Joshi Perhaps the organisation is undertaking a survey on behalf of HSE and wants input/views directly from the Directors rather than any other HSE Persons. What might not have been thought through is that directors are likely to be "busy" and not have time to respond to such telephone surveys!

Posted By Elfin Davy Hi folks - Just a note of caution before this is dismissed. At a recent IOSH branch meeting one of the guest speakers was an HSE inspector. He said that - at least in our area (the North East), the HSE ARE planning a campaign over the next year or so where they visit organisations to speak to the Board of Directors in order to "remind" them of their health and safety responsibilities. If this campaign is being rolled out nationwide, these calls may well be genuine after all.

Posted By A Campbell Just had a call from a gent named 'Theo' calling on behalf of the HSE. The survey is directed specifically to directors for feedback regarding their responsibilities so appear to want to discuss directly with the director responsible for H&S!

Posted By Robert K Lewis As some have said above the value of these types of survey are zilch as I have yet to meet a director prepared to give time on the phone at short notice without work/profit being involved. Bob

Posted By Linda Crossland-Clarke Hi Folks The HSE had a tender out recently, perhaps a company is trying to straw poll opinions and training needs to put in its tender presentation? Some of the training was part funded by the HSE. Regards Linda

Posted By db This is a bona fide HSE survey carried out on their behalf. There should have been a mention of it on the web site - but I can't find it. Your company shpould also have been notified beforehand. Whether that has happened and not been cascaded or not happened at all....
