Posted By Merv Newman http://www.timesonline.c...ws/uk/article6860922.ece Despite the best efforts of IOSH (all hail to our past president) we still haven't won the elfnsafety battle. Even if there is no "official" IOSH presence, could local branches think about making the effort to get involved next time there is a conker competition in your area ? No safety glasses, hard hats or welders gloves allowed. Though cricket pads and box could be considered legitimate PPE. Especially if your knot is too small. Merv

Posted By J Knight To quote the Times article 'But they have contributed to a sense that traditional pursuits are under threat.' I rather think it's actually the media that have done that. What have HSE done apart from 'publicly backed the sport? In the US there's an open debate between big- versus small-government. Whichever side of the fence anyone might personally take, it's healthy to discuss these things openly. In the UK I am afraid the debate is conducted by stealth, with both sides using phrases like common sense and business efficiency to support their arguments. The Times is in the small government camp; I suspect the H&S battle with that paper and the media group it belongs to is actually unwinnable on the current terms of engagement, however willingly IOSH past-presidents knock about with nuts on string. Enough posting here, it's back to stopping people breaking themselves, John
