Hi all, I am having an issue with 1 employee who wearing glasses refuses to wear eye protection on top his glasses while using hand held grinder to cut stone, with the complaint he cant see through glasses and any ppe(goggles/facemask/wrap around glasses). The glasses he wears are small and do not offer protection, and cannot see with out them. He wants company to pay for contact lenses at a cost of £20 per month, then he will be prepared to use goggles/glasses.
Has any come across this before and offer me some sound advice please.
Thanks
Trevor

I have some sympathy with the employee as I have tried to wear safety specs over my own with very poor results. The solution requested is not the most cost effective though. It is entirely reasonable to get prescription safety specs to the correct standard.
Also £20 per month is over the odds. Iget mine for £10 per month and I am sure there are better deals out there.

With the greatest of respect might I suggest that overglasses are not suitable as they do not have the correct impact resistance should the disc burst. I'd suggest a full face visor to EN 166 1B as this protects the eyes and the face in the event that the disc bursts or disintergrates or the wheel skips off the work piece.
Regards
Matt

Thanks for the replies, I wear glasses myself and have used the goggles with no prob doing the same job, and there is a full face mask if required up to standard EN 166 1B,(which was provided for him) the problem he was having was seeing through glasses & visor, leaving vision distorted. Will look at prescription glasses/goggles

Supply him with safety glasses to the same prescription as his "normal" specs.

If one of our employees refused to wear eye protection on top his glasses while using hand held grinder to cut Metal or stone, he would not be allowed to use the grinder and therefor unable to do the job he is employed under contract to do due to his refusal to wear the correct PPE he would definitely be in the realms of a disciplinary and further refusal to wear the required PPE would lead to dismissal Harsh YES
But Employees have a duty to cooperate with the findings of your risk Assessment. Think What would the Judge say if you let him continue to work and he injures himself.

Full face visor as deemed by your risk assessment surely. And if he STILL refuses, disciplinary action.
The man with the curly wig wont be too happy if you just let it roll on and he gets hurt.
