Posted By Eliot Clarke Can anyone help!! If there is extraction (to a bag) on a grinder / polisher in MVR industry, should the equipment be inspected every 14 months as LEV? I received numerous responses to this, one insurance inspection company said no, as these were hand tools???? An occupational hygenist has suggested that it would be best practice to inspect equipment! Any advice? Thanks

Posted By Jeremy Carter I dont see why any dedicated extraction (i.e. not general room ventilation)that is removing a hazardous substance from the workplace would NOT be classified as LEV. Page 35 of HSG 258 makes it clear that these sort of Low Volume High Velocity (LVHV) hoods are indeed LEV The sort of inspection and test regime that you could do on such an extract would clearly be pretty basic compared to something like a woodworking system!

Posted By A Campbell Eliot, As you are well informed... it is actually good practice and I expect is a recommendation. Although not a legal requirement under COSHH you can apply the requirement under PUWER... so inspection at an agreed practical timescale would certainly be beneficial?

Posted By Jeremy Carter As I mentioned in my previous reply you need to look at the relevant bit of HSG258 - I'll quote from page 2 where LEV is defined as follows: 'LEV is an engineering system to reduce exposures to airborne contaminants such as dust, mist, fume, vapour or gas in a workplace' If your hand grinding tool extract is doing this then it is LEV!

Posted By holmezy Eliot is the extraction system you use on the hand tool an active one, ie is there a fan that draws the dust etc away from the tool or breathing zone? If so then this would be classed as an LEV system and be subject to 14 monthly exams. If it is a passive system, ie just a dust bag applied to the tool which collects the dust, and as such is wholly dependant on the forces generated by the tool to expel the dust, then this isnt LEV and therefore not subject to 14 month exams. Probably need more info from you to give a definitive answer? Holmezy
