We are currently doing property maintenance on a number of houses on an estate where there is a need to use scaffold.
As part of this, the relevant handover certificates and inspections are being carried out and recorded.
However, we were using scafftags to demonstrate the inspection, but this is no longer possible as kids keep stealing the tags.
If we are doing everything else we should be is this ok?
Thanks

Posted By Dec39 I understand it may be a large project, but can you not fence off the scaffold with block and mesh fencing or hoarding, this woulld also help to stop kids climbing scaffold and also removing tags etc Dec

The trouble is we are going from one property to the next so cannot fence it off as in some cases it maybe a semi detached house so the kids jump the next doors fence or gate.
I agree if it were a proper site we could fence it off.

Posted By Kevin Kelly If you keep written records of Hand Overs and Inspections at hand then that would be quiet sufficient given the circumstances. As you say of it was a "normal" site fencing and security wouldn't be an issue.
My main worry would be if the kids were to climb onto the scaffold. Ideally you should ensure plenty of signage forbidding access and also remove the access ladder nightly. It would still be possible for them to climb up the outside but at least you are taking some proactive measures.

Posted By Robin M What you are doing is fine. It is the inspection report (kept on file) that is the requirement. Scafftags just provide a "nice to have" visual confirmation for those using the scaffold. By making sure the person doing the inspections makes the relevant supervisor aware immediately of any faults then the scaffold can be taken out of service immediately until put right. Supervisors or managers can keep an eye on the files to make sure inspections are being done. Scaff-tags are good, but not essential.

Posted By Ron Hunter I would echo concerns raised by others regarding protection of the public. It doesn't take much additional effort by way closely fitting 'heras'anti-climb panels and/or wooden hoarding, brackets, chains and padlocks to effectively deny access to the scaffold around a domestic dwelling, whilst still allowing light into the ground-floor. IMHO standards of public protection in this type of work could readily and should be better, and regularly falls short of "reasonably practicable" measures. LA Clients should be doing more here to raise the bar.
