Chris Peace wrote an interesting, informative and useful piece in October's SHP, which was mainly about the forthcoming ISO Standard for Risk Management. What he didn't mention though, perhaps because he works in New Zealand, is that there is a British Standard on Risk Management - BS 31100, which was published in 2008 and is available and ready now.

I am a member of the IRM as well as IOSH, and I see risk management as part of my role, there's no doubt in my mind that application of standards like 31100 is useful in everyday H&S management, something Chris points out in his article. To extend Chris's closing comment in his article; H&S professionals should get hold of a copy of 31100 now, as well as or even instead of 31000 when that comes out,

I think BS 31100:2008 "Risk management —
Code of practice" provides an excellent overview of how organisation should manage all manner of risks.

Most of us should be familiar with the 11 Risk Management Principles stated in the CoP, although in practice, we may not be explicitly using all of them.

Both BS 31100 and the proposed ISO 31000 cannot be certificated against.
