Hi Rob,
It would need to be at least as strong as the rest of the system (harness, Karibiners, etc). You will need to check what this is on the equipment you are using but if memory serves me correctly it is usually in the region of 25kn or 2500kgs static load.

It will be specified in the product instructions for the inertial reel - strengths vary depending on territory and model, but in the EU the most common value is 10kN (because that's the capacity of an EN795 anchor device). British standards suggest several different values.
