Was asked recently by one of our Clients if we had a swine flu action plan. We are a SME civils / transport company. The client want to ensure we have plans in place to ensure continuity of service during and pandemic.
As the answer was no, I have spend some hours trawling the net for guidance, and remain unsure exactly what to do. Beginning to feel how long is a piece of string.
Have returned to the client but they appear as unsure as I am.
Have any similar company prepared such a plan? Any pointers, areas to consider?

Note you mention that you are a transport company. We have looked at the potential problem, but the following are some of the points considered.
1. We have multi-crews to operate the public transport.
2. Swine flu generally lasts about a week.
3. Crews are on cycles of 3 weeks
4. If the local infection is rate is high enough to affect crews, then the local demand for services is likely to fall as well
We believe that with a combination of overtime and, if necessary, slight reduction in frequency, we can continue to offer a service unless the local infection rate is higher than the medical advice expects - when the demand will fall of anyway.

Hi Leslie,
I tried to send you a swine flu policy using the email address accessed by clicking on your username.
The email was returned with the following error:
"There was a SMTP communication problem with the recipient's email server."
Maybe others are having the same problem...?

Noted the problem, my new email address (new in the sense I had it for over 18 months) is what is on myiosh, however old address still on forum contact.
I assumed this would update when I updated my details.
Will contact IOSH.

Leslie,
I had an almost identical request a couple of weeks ago.
My response, in conjunction with HR, was that in the event of a true pandemic the company requesting our "swine flu action plan" would almost certainly be suffering as high a level of staff absence as the majority of UK business for the following reasons -
Staff staying off -
to look after their wife/husband/partner/child
so they don't bring flu into the work place
because they are just plain scared to attend work in case they "catch it" at work
lack of public transport with drivers/operators off
(in extremis) - shortages of petrol/diesel
How long is a bit of string? Good question which I think nobody is, in the event of a true pandemic, able to accurately predict.
If some quoted figures are correct, business could see 50 to 60% absence at the height of a pandemic. Plan for the worst and hope for the best is my advice.
Regards,
David
