Hi All,
Firstly, so good that the forums are looking more professional now!
Secondly - Who has experience with RSI? I have 2 "examples"...
1. The person who has no real H&S knowledge but is experiencing RSI in their wrist. They have told a fellow colleague (not employer) and the colleague has provided them with a wrist support for their keyboard. The employer will arrange ergonomic keyboard etc now the problem has occurred - but where do they stand for the fact that they have developed this issue before control measures were in place?
2. The person who works in H&S but did not realise that they could develop RSI from driving (changing gear) although they did request an automatic due to amount of driving, but this was denied out right...
Obviously i appreciate the legal standpoint for making employees aware of risks under HaSaWA... but would like to get some advice on the specific circumstances outlined above...

Just giving them an ergo keyboard and wrist rest may not be enough.
The DSE one is a large issue. When the person started they should have been given a DSE Assessment if they have been classed as a User. However I prefer to be safe and class all staff who use PCs as Users. The assessment show also show up if the person has an injury or illness that may need special attention for DSE use. Bad back, carpal tunnel syndrom etc. Further will also depend if the User is a typist or a two finger user. Professional users have micro-movements and are more prone to RSI upper limb disorders than two finger users who tend to jab more at the keys and thus move the tendons more but can still get RSI etc.
The other problems are the chair the desk height and monitor height will all need to be adjusted to the user. I have had to raise a desk 25mm/1 inch and then raise the monitor another 75mm/3 inches form its top height for a User to sit properly. It then took over three weeks for their back problem to go even though they were getting physiotherapy. This was confirmed with my OH department as we work closely together.
One railway company has told me that gel wrist rests create carpal tunnel syndrom which came from their OH department and they have banned all gel wrist rests. I have however been unable to find any evidence on this so far.
Do not make users use wrist rests I have found Users either love them or hate them.
The last point is that mouse use can course the most RSI in a User. If they have RSI in one arm and its their mouse one, train the user to use keyboard shortcuts and reduce mouse use. There are vertical mice and a 3M one like a stick (not a joy stick) with the buttons on top of the shaft this keeps the wrist in a natural form where a mouse twists the hand into an unnatural shape.
As this damage has now happened I suggest they see OH or their GP to get a proper diagnosis. This will tell you how it can be corrected with physiotherapy, rest etc. Remember all DSE use will give the User symptoms if they are on it all day. The assessment will say when rests may need to be taken and if any training is required. Rests are classed as using the phone, using the photocopier etc.
As for the RSI in vehicles this should have been risk assessed for the persons size to where the controls are in the vehicle. They may have their seat too low or be too small/large for the vehicle or have the seat too far forward or to far back. Somewhere there is an ergonomic problem and it looks to be how they sit and being able to operate the gear lever over time. Train cabs have had a lot of work to try and fit the controls around the driver. The risk assessment should include breaks where simple exercises can be undertaken to stretch arms, neck, legs, shoulders etc.
Again get OH or their GP to diagnose it. The company may be required to pay for the separate physiotherapy if they don’t have an OH and the symptoms are severe.
