Hi Everyone,
I need some advice on BS:EN3:1996. Basically I need to know whether this is the current and most up to date British Standard when it comes to Fire Extinguishers?? Or is there something more up to date than this?
Reason i'm asking is because we've just been hit with a rather hefty bill to have our extinguishers serviced, and this was based on them coming to the end of their life, so they replaced a load and charged us a big cost. However we get our fire extinguishers cheaper from an another company. The service agents have said if we can tell them what prices we currently pay and and as long as they conform to the same BS that they do then they will happily price match - however before i go marching in saying that they conform to BS EN3:1996, i want to have my facts correct in knowing that this is definately the standard they are on about.
hope that makes sense? thank you in advance for any advice you can give.
(also if anyone can recommend a good fire exitnguisher company that can handle national multi site organisations I'd be interested to hear what you got as we seem to come up with a lot of issues from this very well known Fire Extinguisher servicing company!)

To the best of my knowledge BS:EN3:1996 is the current standard for fire extinguishers and is the standard to which the fire extinguishers the company I work for sells. Sorry, can't help on the service provision as we have ours serviced as part of a ppm contract with 3rd parrty facilities company who would sub that bit out regionally.

The standard you have noted is out of date. The new standard is BS EN 3-8:2006 (BS EN 3-9:2006 for CO2 extinguishers). To my knowledge portable fire extinguishers do not have a defined life. they aer considered suitable for use as long as they pass visual and hydrostatic tests. I think teh hydrostatic tests are every five years. it is quite a common, and very unsavoury practice, for service companies to replace items that do not need to be replaced, and to cover previous service history to promp a hydrostatic test. As for reference material that indicates the replacement life of the extinguishers.
