I’m looking at options for fire courses / qualifications that will give me a bit more depth to the basic knowledge I already have of fire safety and was wondering whether anyone can suggest anything which I can take a look at the content of. I have a fairly good knowledge of the Reform Order, fire safety and management principle’s but would like to know more about the technical side, particularly looking at structural integrity of buildings, british standards, building regs etc

L2P, run by the fire service college should give you all of that and more. Plus it will give you enough to sit the NEBOSH fire cert exam. I can't praise the FSC enough! absolutely A1

I would suggest that you try the IFE (institute of fire engineers) or the FPA. I did an IFE approved course a few years back with CHSS (but I dont think they are around anymore) and it helped my knowledge of fire, prevention, precaution and building design. The focus with IFE courses is on the more technical matters that link in with building regs (Approved Document B) and the new BS9999. Your fire risk assessments are then based on occupancy factors, available exit width, travel distances, compartmentation and detection etc. A much more scientific way of going about it and great ammunition for when the fire officer visits. If you know more than they do- trust me it helps!
