To stop potential break-ins a car pound site has put padlocks onto the escape gates (off the site, not out of the building). However the gates also act as an escape route and I’m trying to find a suitable locking device.

Can anyone help with another type of locking device that will offer a quick release in case of fire but secure enough that malicious persons can’t get in?

Is it locked when people are still inside the compound or just at the end of the day?

Had a similar issue, where due to local issues, we had to have the fire doors locked and metal grilled at the end of the day. However, during the working day it was the supervisors 1st job in the morning to unlock all the doors and fold back the bars.

It's a 24hr site so although there are generally more staff through the day it is used 24hrs.

Why not have a padlock with a combination number known to all staff (or fire wardens or whoever would need to open it). As it is an external gate I don't imagine that there will be any real need for an immediate exit.

Pugh, is it possible to use a padlock with a key housed in a break-glass box, only accessible from inside the compound? I used this solution following a fire risk assessment at a factory where one escape route exited in to an enclosed yard.

It is I believe possible to get a key box that will operate as an alarm activation point that will then trigger lights, cameras, alarms etc if needed. Any good security store should be able to advise.
