During a recent television programme, one of those extreme fishing boat ones, they quoted a figure for the number of deaths at sea each year around the UK as around 100. As the HSE quote somewhere in the region of 200-220 deaths per year due to accidents in the workplace, are deaths at sea included in these stat's? If anyone has any verifiable statistics on this, I'd appreciate your input and comments. Thank you Wazimu mzungu

Deaths to fishermen are not investigated by the HSE but by the MAIB (Marine Accident Investigation Branch) so HSE statistics will omit any deaths at sea. The only exceptions will be to shore workers on ships in UK ports and anything specifically to do with the offshore oil industry such as platforms etc. Colin

there are numberious deaths that are work related that are not accounted for under HSE stats Radio 4 last week quoted many cases such as 20,000 [not sure of the exact figure!] that can be related to COSHH alone that are not published by the HSE

Thanks to all who replied, especially Colin. Got MAIB's 2008 report http://www.maib.gov.uk/c...nual%20Report%202008.pdf Made for interesting reading, and nowhere near the couple of hundred deaths a year as stated on Sky. Thanks again. Wazimu Mzungu
