Hi

I have my NEBOSH General, NEBOSH Fire Cert, NVQ level 3....
I would like advice, should I do the NEBOSH DIP or Level 4 NVQ? Does the NVQ Level 4 give you Tech IOSH?
I have a job, but admit I am not 100% happy as I am not doing what I thought I would be plus the pay is terrible... but its a job. I am thinking of giving up my job and trying to set up my own company, in fact can these qualifications be completed without a job? Can I get a grant?
Any suggestions most welcome.
Thank you.

You would have got more answers if you had posted this in study support....

Both NVQ4 & NEBOSH Dip will get you GradIOSH, which with IPD showing two years of application will allow you to gain your Charter following peer review. Which you do depends on how you study and what suits you best, and it's also worth saying that you have to be sure that your current work role has the depth and breadth you would need to get through all the NVQ units.

There is a perception that employers prefer NEBOSH Dip, but I occasionally have posts on offer, and when I do I don't care what the actual qualification is, as long as it entitles the holder to achieve Chartered status, as in my view the CPD is the bit that really matters. Of course experience counts as well, but your query is purely about qualifications, so that's what I am addressing.

Long and short of it is they will both get you what you want, I did NEBOSH Dip (old style 2 parter) and have never looked back, but I have had colleagues at various times who have qualified in every way possible,

As quoted above you initially need to be sure you will be in a job that is broad ( and lasts ) inorder to complete the NVQ Level 4. If you feel that this could be a issue, then the NEBOSH Dip is probably the best alternative ( this can be completed between one year and 18 months ), although you can also enroll on a postgraduate course in health and safety which will get you to gradiosh status.

You could investigate whether any funding is availble from various governmental agencies, although this is dependant on how much you earn annually.

Expect to spend anything bewteen 2k to 5k for any of the courses.

There's two other points you make which need an answer. As both I and Fraser have said, NVQ4 means you have to be in work, as other posters on this forum have found you cannot complete units otherwise. You are thinking of jacking your job in, which could be a problem, and I'm not sure how self-employment fits in with this; you would need to ask your chosen provider I think.

And can you get a grant? Not as far as I know, but NEBOSH do some bursaries (one of my team got his NGC for £35 on a NEBOSH bursary) but apart from 'working for a Charity', which is one of the criteria they use for handing them out and how my colleague got one, I don't know how or why NEBOSH award these,

Stay in your job for 6 more months to complete NVQ4, this is the quickest way if you are willing to put the effort to get to GradIOSH, the you can quit or change jobs as you wish. And while you have Tech IOSH try to fill in your CPD during the same period, afterall you have a develop your personal competency profile inline with IOSH expectation.

Good Luck
