Is it acceptable to use the forks of a FLT with a sling around to pick up items. i.e. using it like a hoist? Thoughts and comment please.

Hi, I would say absoulutely not. It would affect the stability and centre of gravity of the FLT. From a L.O.L.E.R. point of view the FLT is being used for something it wasn't designed for.

Totally agree with DNW. Underslung loads on an FLT are asking for trouble. Andy

I agree with everyone else. Also be aware the rating plate SWL on the FLT could be exceeded. As the forks are recognised as an attachment, the sling you are adding technically would need to be calibrated on the rating plate. good reference is the HSG 6 (for FLTs)

It is a very common practice and jibs are available to attach to carriage plates to allow it to be done safely. Using strops on forks is questionable but it would depend on the findings of the risk assessment. 1 ton aggrigate bags have 'handles' on top that are designed so that forks can be threaded through to allow the bag to be lifted, these are in common use throughout the country.

Safety Witch, Can you give us any more detail? Type of truck, load, circumstances, frequency?

No sorry that's as much as I have, I suppose its more of a general question than anything specific. Appreciate all the points raised though.

Hmmm that said there's still the problem of somebody steadying the load whilst in close proximity to a moving machine if the load does need to be manovered and not just lifted.

Well that would depend on the length of the strop, how many strops were used, the nature of the load. There's just so many variables that you can't make a judgement call without more information.

Im afraid not my friend, any lifting equipment be it shackles or chains can only be used for the use intended and should not be used as a substitute for the correct lifting tackle. Not apart from being clearly unsafe or inappropriate it would also be illegal. As others have stated there are a large number of fork lift attachments that can be found on the market and its worth resrearching before doing something that you may regret
