Hi,

carrying out maintenance on a press with the power on?????

What instances/circumstances are there that would require this to happen?? Should this be allowed?

and if this was to happen then you would need a very strict lock out/tag out procedure in place.....

Only reason I can think of would be fault diagnosis. Is this preventative or reactive maintenance?

Permit to work/Safe system of work will need to be in place. We occasionally have to do it if the automatic feed is playing up and so have a SSOW but operator no where near the tool. Is it a power press or a press brake? The latter would have the light guard and that can have an operation on it that allows maintenance with power on.

Am aware of fatalities where operators crushed between the tools of a power press - have you got Scotches?

I would really think it was not a very good idea if can possibley be avoided

Most power presses are equipped with an inch control. Certainly when I was a press setter, a number of setting operations were done with the power on using the inch control, depending on the size of the press of course. In the case of 20 and 40 ton presses the ram was lowered using a bar in the fly wheel. None of these are maintenance operations obviously.
From the point of view of maintenance If work neede to be done on the ram then maybe lowereing if with an inch control may be done but other than that I can't think of any other work that would need the power on.
