The UK Contractors Group require that from January 2010 all supervisors working on their sites need to be able to demonstrate that 1) they have sufficient knowledge of Health and Safety gained at a construction specific course of at least two days duration (then there is a list of course content they list as a minimum requirment) and 2) they must demonstrate having attended training including an understanding of behavioural issues, leadership and effective intervention skills. It must include delivering effective presentations (eg Tool Box Talks), role play etc. Both 1 and 2 need to have some form of testing and certification. All effective from January 1 as outlined in the press release of 2 September 2009 on their web site. UKCG will not recommend any courses and the final arbiter is the Principal Contractor.
Has anyone done any preparation for this and if so, who and what training are you using please? Has anybody received any specific communication from either the UKCG or any of ther members?
Thanks for any input.

I know as part of the Constructionskills SMSTS programme we ask learners to do a presentation, say asbestos, CDM, Lone Working etc. Most panic at the thought of a presentation in front of an audience! But it is for the purpose of effective tool box talks etc. So whilst some don not recommend, you will find that issues of that nature it's a requirement in many courses, SMSTS being one. Hope this helps to some extent.

Evening
The supervisor course needs to be one of their "accepted" courses.
This is normally the Construction Skills Site Supervisor Safety Training Scheme, but depending on which area of construction you are working in, you may be able to complete your trade bodies supervisor course (Eg Piling Federation) if it is recognised by UKCG
The CSCS gold supervisor card is also accepted, for which you need to complete an NVQ level 3.
You need to speak with the main contractors you deal with because some of the UKCG's members are asking for specifics; I know of one member who is not going to accept anything but a gold CSCS supervisor card, whilst another, nothing less than a gold CSCS card PLUS a 2 day supervisor training course

Thank you for your comments all. Is it true that there is a two year lead in before it becomes zero tolerance?

We have already been involved in this through a UK CG starting the idea early. I feel that most will accept the SSSTS course as another UK CG Contractor has already intimated this to us. We have put people through the 2 day course as it is only £300.00.
The strange thing at present is that I with a CSMS Certificate can supervise the erection of a Tower Crane? A Tower Crane Erection Supervisor with a CSCS card an Apointed Person CITB card 30 years experience in the Industry cannot. Funny old world!
