I'm looking for information on what health conditions might compromise someone's fitness to wear RPE (or to require a different type of RPE to what's normally supplied - in our case a non-powered full-face mask with filter) - things that don't come into the face-fit test, or might even prevent someone from having a face-fit test.
I've found references to asthma, and claustrophobia has been suggested. Does anyone know more or better still can point me to some definitive information? This is to form the basis of a fitness assessment for our occ health to carry out.
Cheers Kate

HSG 53 Respiratory protective equipment at work: A practical guide
Have a look at pages 19 and 20, can get it on free download from HSE site
I knew about facial hair, scarring, glasses, but had forgotted pregnancy as a factor.

Hi Martin, the physical exercises can be vigorous. I allow people to take their time when undertaking face fits, follow the criteria but don't kill anyone in the process. But yeah, pregnancy is an issue. The TSI Portacount software uses prompts to ask questions. The brief is "have you had anything to drink in the last 15 minutes, or have you smoked recently". I bet there are many who would not consider this, particularly if someone is in their early pregnancy.

And I just found something which indicated that those who may have epilepsy should be appraised of the specific risks should they suffer a 'grand mal' while wearing RPE, again, something which I had forgotten.

That's perfect, Martin, thankyou.
I did look at HSG53 but missed that bit which was exactly what I wanted.
Pregnancy I think would best be handled under the pregnancy risk assessment, because of its temporary nature.
Do you have a reference for the epilepsy?

Sorry no, can't find it, but it was to do with industrial painting and the hazards. Some random webpage.
