Hi I am repeatedly being asked by customers to provide MSDS sheets for our products (we manufacture plastic packing materials, such as bubble wrap) My opinion is that MSDS sheets are not necessary for these products, although I do have the MSDS for the resins used to manufacture these products....... Any advice and other opinions on this would be much appreciated.

Not an MSDS as such but I'm led to believe you must be able to supply details of the materials used in the manuafacturer of the product if requested under REACH.

Jack, I agree with Smurf in that bubble wrap is not a substance per se. HSWA section 6 (c) specifies that 'adequate information should be provided', but cannot see how bubble wrap could cause any harm let alone considered hazardous. Suggest it is down to people being over zealous and who perhaps do not know the difference between a potentially harmful product or substance.

Jack I understand you have the answer, but if the questioners persist despite everything, here is an American bubble wrap MSDS, just out of interest. http://www.uline.com/PDF/MS-3927.PDFMartin

is it a case of What if - you supply bubble wrap to a company and they have a fire. The fire service will want to know what is burning so they can deal effectively with it, i.e. fire water run off into water courses, etc.

Ray, you can not see how bubble wrap can cause any harm. You have no imagination!

I thought popping the bubbles on bubble wrap was a long established form of stress relief?

...asphyxiation due to falling into a 10 yard skip filled with obnoxious bubble wrap.

So we've established bubble wrap has got obnoxious in it. What's the hazard classification for obnoxious? Harmful? Irratant?

Obnoxious is definately an irritant and is likely to lead to bruising and swelling as a result of violent impact.
Seriously though, how can bubble wrap be classed as harmful under COSHH? As stated by RayRapp, it is not a substance. Do the people that are asking for the MSDS for bubble wrap also ask their suppliers for MSDS for tables, chairs, envelopes, or anything else that may have used chemicals in its manufacture or creation? I seriously doubt it.

Well if we do too much stress stress relief popping these bubbles, this could then become an RSI issue, could it not? Androo, I agree if Bubblewrap is to be classed as harmful, so would almost everything around us......... I feell my COSHH folder growing hugely.......
Seriously though, thanks for your input guys, its made for some enjoyable reading.
