Hi all,

as we have gotten to a point of greater staff development in my new role, i am looking to start doing weekly internal training updates with the workshop staff.

One of the big things we want to do is get all the guys up to muster on lifting operations and manual handling, as this is where, if we have an accident, it will happen.

Does anyone have any goo sources of training video's either DVD's to buy or download etc.

I am looking to do groups of 4-6 guys at a time and have a Q&A session after wards.

so anything that isn't to childlike (as a lot of these vids are) would be good, and not coming across to the guys as if they are stupid.

cheers for any help

Rick

Rick

there are a few out there. Have a look at

for some freebie views. Some better than others.

Morning Rick,

finding a generic video is fairly easy, however, as a former instructor of Lifting from manual handling to examination of Lifting Equipment finding one that will enable a worthwhle Q&A is a different story they are in my opinion more about giving the instructor a rest! They are more an aide than basis for instruction.

what level of knowledge do your guys currently posess? what level would you like them to attain? how will you measure the learning objective - is the person holding the talk able to field the questions?

I think the idea is a good one and should be developed - but ensure that you run the content and the learning objectives past someone who would give you constructive input. Its emparting good useful information that counts if accidents are to be avioded.

Hope this helps

Db

ps be aware that some of the video presentations are for the Austrailian market - the laws are different there!

Hi Db,

thanks for the input, the training the guys currently have is basically, visually witnessing 10 lifts carried out by a trained operator. However i feel it would be better practice to let the guys understand the dangers of incorrect lifts, which i see in the yard all too often.

The plan is i would chair the safety training, set up the videos etc, and have one oif the qualified banksmen\slingers there to answer any questions, that way the guys will be recieving training from the HSE rep and from someone they trust in their work sphere.

Basically i want to ensure all the workers know what they are doing and can carry out the work safely, as most of the courses i see from 3rd party providers are all for full banskem slinging course, where i just want the guys to have a good knowledge of the basics and the dangers, as foreman and safety reps in the yard are always at hand if they are unsure, but a lot of the guys can carry out work without help, so i want them to be more confident.

Hence, a program of internal training is something i want to develop, as the guys would listen more than a jolly at a training centre that costs us £300
