Hi, has anyone got a PPE checklists i can use, for a university maintenance team.
Just the usual gear, hard hats, overalls, safety shoes, ear defenders, goggles/safety glasses etc.
We need to have some form of traceability, of what is used, by whom, and and how offen it's changed.
(found one guy using an out of date safety helmet).
Many thanks.

Don't be confused by the date of manufacture stamp on the hard hat, with an expiry date. In theory is there no such thing as an expiry date on a helmet - if they are stored and looked after correctly they could last a lifetime.

Usually the manufacturers recommend either a 3 year or a 5 year life for hard hats (sometimes from manufacture and sometimes from first use).

I think a better approach is regular inspections of PPE (which can be done by the user or by someone else). It's easy enough to develop a checklist for that, just list the items of PPE with bullet points of what you want looked at for each. Which you can get from the HSE's guidance on PPE if not off the top of your head.

Hi Alan

I use a check sheet signed by each individual so I can keep on top of there usage. This can be used in any industry as it can be modified to suit your requirements
Not sure how to attach ?

In terms of traceability, we have a simple PPE requisition form filled in by the employee specifying what they require and signed by them on issuing of the items. This info then gets logged on a database. you could probably use an excel document and set up prompts as and when you need to issue replacements.

you could also train them to look for signs of when the PPE needs replacement and make it their responsibility to obtain replacements when required.
