We have worked hard on developing robust procedures for selection of contractors and after a few internal communication problems all have taken on board and is now making a real difference in selection of competent contractors but also as an added bonus internally in our organisations safety culture and mindset. My query is the need to limit this to contractors or should we be rolling these questions via pre-selection H and S questionnaire to external training companies - as we occasionally use small, self-employed, specialist, "recommended by employees" which are then selected by the training department. At present the only time the H and S department get to see them is the morning of site induction. What additional information from a H and S perspective apart from quals, experience, testimonials, reputation, fitting our requirements should we be asking of potential external companies whom we wish to deliver training to our workforce? e.g insurance, RAs, method of work/delivery etc?

Dave

I suspect you have covered most requirements. I can only think of qualifications that are missing from your list.

Dave - Our QA department monitors subcontractor/supplier approval which requires sign off from departments such as H&S, QA, commercial, project management. Commercial might think that said subcontractor/supplier is fantastic because of his low prices but H&S might think they are [expletive deleted] and mark them down accordingly. The company needs to be fully aware of ALL aspects before making a final decision. Incidentally, a poor mark dosnt always mean they wont be used, but a director in our company has the final say so its on his head if it goes wrong.

Many thanks for comments and I have revised procedures accordingly. As so often effective communication between all parties is the key.
