Is their any specific guidance on how close toilets must be to the work area. I recieved some literature from a hirer saying that the HSE now say that they must be within 100m, but can't find reference to this anywhere on the HSE website. Your help much appreciated.

I am not aware of anything other than provided in CDM Regs which states 'suitable and sufficient sanitary conveniences shall be provided or made available at readily accessible places.' Ray

I don't think there is anything as specific as a 100m distance because of the wide variety of potential sites where you may need access to welfare facilities. However you may find an answer to your query by looking at HSE construction information sheets CIS46 and CIS18 available free on the HSE's website. Hope this helps.

Dear folks If I' m not mistaken, (somebody can correct me if he/she wants), here are the requirements of the Factory Act 1961- although not applicable but still relevant; Every sanitary convenience shall not communicate with any workroom, restroom or mess except through an open or through an intervening ventilated space. May be used as a guideline in the absence of an applicable one. I haven' t come across the 100m rule as yet. Question- What do you do if the size of the site is small i.e less than 100m?? Vrick

I know it's Monday morning Vrick, but 'within 100m' means it could be a metre away if the site was that small... ;-) Alan

Thank you all. Although I work in construction, this question is reference our operations in our yard. Sorry for not being clearer. I think for a fixed work place like this then more than 100m would be a bit far. Opinions appreciated...

The 100m figure does not come from HSE; it comes from BS 6465-1:2006+A1:2009 on sanitary installations which says that staff in permanent stationary workplaces in buildings should not have to walk more than 100 m or travel up or down more than one floor to use the sanitary facilities -

And feeling a bit mischievous, the only reference that I have come across is on Blackadder Goes Forth, episode 1 (Captain Cook) when if you are going to partake in some of Baldricks sauted rat, the advice is that you "..get within dashing distance of the latrine, and then you scoff it right down.."

Obviously we have a risk assessment for sauted rat. That goes without saying. :-)
