Hi all,
We are looking to develop a standardised gritting procedure for all our external sites (that the public and our staff use). Ideally we are looking to use a published reccomended figure of grit per m2 and put this into simple terms i.e x cups full over x distance etc to ensure that adequate grit is laid.
Having had a look at HSE website the only figures I can come up with are for roads (10 - 15gms/m2 or 20 - 40 gms/m2)
Could anyone point me in the direction of any guidance for gritting amounts for paths (anything other than roads)

Hi Jake, would it not be simpler just to specify the use of a grit dispenser (manually operated) that delivers a set amount whilst it is being operated?
This would take a bit of confusion out of the equation relating to who would measure the amount laid down and a grit dispensing manufacturer would have a greater knowledge of the amount required to be distributed by the equipment he manufactures. You then take out the requirement to include a method of measuring the amount being spread to satisfy your gritting procedure.
Just stipulate that the (manufacturers name) manual gritting machine needs to be used to dispense grit.
Obviously this can be used for easily accessed paths and roads but can it be used for your premises?
Sorry if i have just wasted your time suggesting this if it is not applicable, the only other option is to use the figures you already have, as if they are suitable for road use then they should be adequate for paths and ere on the side of caution and use the higher amount.
