I was approached by a work-colleague with this question: He is being asked by his employer to travel to an Eastern European country to do work on their behalf. He will be travelling next week, expects to spend a few weeks at the site, and will repeat this trip on a number of occasions regularly through at least the next 6 months. The site is enclosed and heated and he won't be working outside - however he's concerned with the outside conditions he expects to experience and doesn't believe he has a suitable outdoor jacket to protect him for the periods (of travel to/fro work) when he will be outside. He's asked me if his company should be expected to provide a suitable jacket. Appreciate if you could supply some guidance here as I'm unsure what requirements the company would have in this situation. Regards, Stuart Goudie

He should either a) Ask the company for a suitable coat, or b) Purchase one and submit and expenses claim. Either way he needs to raise his concern with his manager for either to be successful.

As he is not travelling to his normal place of work can we then say he is at work travelling to / from this location? If so his employer should be taking more of an interest in his welfare.

It's a bit of a tricky one Stuart, as it really depends on the exact circumstances. Not sure if there is a strict duty to do so, from what you have descaribed. One the one hand I am all for a bit of personal responsibility. I also note your location as if the same as the person involved, I am surprised that he doesn't have a suitable coat (if he is at the same locale). On the other hand I also kinda think, good employee relations, lets help him out or at least consider splitting the cost perhaps.
