Hi all I am being asked about a method statement for the checking of skips/metal storage containers that hold recyclates. They are currnetly being visually checked and then uplifted by front end loading vehicles and the contents are tipped into the rear of the vehicle. Does anyone have any guidance/instructions on this topic? I have checked the HSE website but can't seem to find anything specific to checks. I have completed a risk assessment for this task. Any constructive advice would be appreciated, this has now turned into a rather urgent query! Thanks DHM

Hi Safety Smurf, No not these ones, as they are not accessible, firmly locked access and is out of reach. There is only a 2" or 3" gap at the top side of skip. I'm after more info on what sort of visual checks the drivers should be carrying outprior to uplift. If there is visible damage ie the skip was hit by a car that skidded in icy weather in the supermarket carpark. How would I go about giving the drivers written instructions on what to check and whether or not to lift the damaged skip up? Thanks DHM

afternoon all, Look at HSE for wish - publication 5 of wish i beleive covers bin lifters - I have undertaken such jobs for authorities and private contractors. There are many things to consider - RO RO's have the bridles, skips have the lifting points and chains, the fauns/Dennis Eagles etc. have the euro-bin and terberg brand lifters, then there's the Pod's for organic waste, the razerbacks for clinical, the up'n'overs of the type you refer to. All are recommended by wish to be examined/tested under LOLER by a 3rd Party for impartiallity. But what about the containers? There is a standard to test to and I know that UK companies (one of which I have worked for) have tested the bins in China at the works. There is a standard for all containers and even a generic on to which all Baskets and Cargo Carrying Units can be examined to if all else fails. Get a good 3rd party Company who should be able to inform you better for the type of Bin/Lifter you have. Hope this helps Yours aye Db
