Hello,
can anyone clarify this for me, our water managment contractor is saying that only his people can carry out water temperature tests.
we have multi-skilled operatives (plumbing, heating etc) who have received training in use of temperature probes and the requirements of L8 regarding hot and cold temperature requirements.

anybody know any reason why we cannot go inhouse with this?

Chris,

There is no reason what-so-ever. The person who gave you this information is either misinformed or lying.

Or he's realising that if you go 'in house' with your water temperature tests you may not have work for him!

If your employees are trained to the same level as his, then there's no reason you couldn't go in house.

Both of the above are absolutely right, I suggest they are trying to keep the work for themselves, as it is a nice little earner. Our caretaking staff do the majority of our water temeperature checks, including sentinel taps etc etc using an infra thermometer. Basic stuff. We do have a contractor that does an idependant check and takes the water samples etc. But there is no reason why most routine temp checks can't be done 'in house'.

Your own in house people are more than adequately competent if they both understand the rationale for testing and how to use the kit and document the results.

Aas pe previous replies we do use our in-house FM team to carry out weekly, monthly and six monthly checks. They all attended a legionella awareness session to fully understand why we are doing the checks and as long as checks are done by competant ops and results recorded I don't see any problem doing in-house.
