Following the recent spate of bad weather I have been asked to check on the suitability of snow/ice chains to be worn over safety boots to prevent slips on ice. These are widely available but I am unaware of anyone who uses them. Have any of you had experience of the use of these - are they effective? Are they easy to use? Ta Irene

I've been using these for a couple of years and I can't praise them enough! You can put them over your shoes or boots in seconds and when not in use, fold up small enough to fit in a jacket pocket! They're not even that expensive! I've had lots of people ask me where I got mine from only to try themselves and find out they were out of stock (a bit like waiting until the roads are icy before buying grit!)

They are widely used by the Royal Mail, apparently, said by a post man friend of mine, they are very good as safety smurf said.

Irene oddly enough I was only online trying to order some yesterday after one of our FM guys had got his own and found then very good when helping to clear our paths. Word of warning they can make a mess if worn indoors. They are not very expensive - around £15 for 2 pr and the supplier I found was WinterTrax.
