There is a subsurface pump chamber on a site which has a steel access ladder to take persons down for maintenance etc. This is attached to a vertical wall and is reached by an access hatch. This extends up to the surface but no further. Should this now have an extension to enable access when the hatch is opened and if so has anyone some suitable products to do this? Thanks David

David, the stringers / handrails should extend 1100mm above ground level (BS 5395: PART 3). For existing ladders this can be done fairly easily. Use 40mm diameter hollow steel tubing / aluminium. It should be bent in an inverted U-shape. Brackets can be welded to the bottom of the tubing to "catch" in the rungs of the ladder. Small brackets are needed on the ladder to guide this extendable handrail. When required this can be pulled up into position. Afterwards it is lowered back down on the ladder. (Sorry I don't have any photos). A good general steel fabricator / blacksmith could help you out. Pat
