Hi,
I have been asked to participate in a Safety Forum at the end of February. The remit is to make it interesting! (no pressure then). The audience will be plant operators an Supervisors who will mainly feel that 'H&S' is abit of a burden and comply because they have to. I'm after some ideas to keep 3-4 hous flowing and interesting with perhaps a quiz and a video plus others....any suggestions?

3 to 4 hours is too long unless you are a very very accomplished presenter and a good comedian combined so firstly I would consider shortening the presentation

Why not introduce the risk assessment process and at the time get them to reveiw the assessments, keeps them involved. Also you could look at corporate manslaughter and what it means to them.

Not sure if it is in your own workplace but if it is take phorographs the day before or of hazards and have a hazard spotting excercise. Maybe a tour pointing out concerns or issues.

I also use the cost calulator from the HSE is shows the unisured costs and then the effects on the company, which could effect payrises etc.

Andy,

Don't include any H&S that is a burden to them or that is done just for compliance. For plant operators there has to enough real health and safety issues that they work with. Base your spot around these. If they think they have got it all sorted then challenge their convictions in a lively discussion.

Andy, start by showing them 'Shake Hands With Danger', probably the best Safety Video ever produced (IMHO). The video lasts for 1/2 hour, and at the end of your forum if there not singing or humming the song, (sung by '3 fingered Joe') that plays throughout, then there is something wrong. Some of them may already have seen it, and you may already know about it, but well worth a showing. You can download it through a variety of sources, just google the title 'Shake Hands With Danger'. Hope that this helps?
