Dear All
Looking for some ideas/suggestions relating to Mine Risk Assessment.
For work in the Oil and Gas Industry (drilling)
At the moment we have a robust Risk Assessment process, which generally covers all task, however I am looking at improving on indentifying hazards associated with low level tasks.
We have tried a booklet to identify hazards basically if more than 3 hazards full RA required, however this does not seem to be working so well, hence my note
I would appreciate if anyone had implemented such a system for dealing with low level tasks or had any ideas
Thanks in advance for any assistance
Regards

to enhance your documented risk assessment process which appears to cover all the substantial risks why not implement a "Dynamic Risk Assessment" process for the workforce to do themselves before starting any task. Some call them a Personal Risk Assessment or a 1 minute risk assessment. Many of the best safety performing large organisations use this principle.
These also encourage employee involvement and responsibility for H&S, also increase hazard awareness and risk perception of the workforce.
But if you are looking for bureaucratic paper system to add to the admin burden then this will not help, But it is a good incident prevention tool.
I can email you some Training slides if you email me

Just be sure that the any DRA process is backed by a substantive documented risk assessment process and that the DRA is a 'top up and tune' to that which exists all ready. It is tempting in a very dynamic environment to pass everything off as too dynamic to assess on paper. It is not. I speak as one who wrote the DRA course for IOSH and worked with Shell Expro for 4 years whilst implementing their risk assessment process. The Fire Service have this right and published an excellent document on the Dynamic Management of Incidents. Not sure if I am allowed to post the reference to it, but it is available publicly.
It is a valid process but is, in truth more about Dynamic Risk Control than assessment. Semantics maybe, but it is generally not the hazard that is changing, it's likelihood and that means that controls need to be adaptive. Operatives need a bank of controls to pick from that are well rehearsed. Initiative is great, but not what you want to be reliant on. You need competency.
Make sense?

just clarify my last post on this.
It is a simple process that encourages the workforce into the habit of spending a minute or 2 identifying the hazards of a task and checking that the risks are properly controlled before starting a task.
It is not exactly the same as the Fire Services Dynamic Risk Assessments for Incidents although the basic principles are used.
What I am suggesting is in addition to the systematic and documented risk assessment, not as replacement.
So, I use the term dynamic risk assessment for this undocumented mini risk assessment, others may consider this description is incorrect.

No argument there Steve. Just aware that other people read the thread other than the original poster and sometimes get the wrong end of the stick.
Paperwork doesn't keep people safe does it. I'm all for operatives giving it a once over.
It's like behavioural safety. It's good, has it's place - but it's the icing not the cake if you follow me.
